The BCG World Atlas a world first in the fight against tuberculosis

A team of researchers is launching the BCG World Atlas: a first-of-its-kind, searchable website that provides detailed information on TB vaccination policies and practices for more than 180 countries.The BCG vaccination can cause false positives in the skin test that's routinely used to screen for latent TB. "As a clinician, if you're trying to interpret the skin test in a foreign-born person, you're going to want to know when the BCG vaccination was given back home and how many times it has been given," the Atlas' project leader said.

New TB vaccine enters clinical testing

Aeras announced it will initiate a Phase I clinical trial of an investigational live recombinant tuberculosis vaccine at Saint Louis University. The new vaccine, called AERAS-422, is a modernized version of the currently used TB vaccine - Bacille Calmette Guerin, which is widely viewed as insufficient in preventing pulmonary TB.
